Mario Guimaraes Jnr a former PhD student from Brazil, in the School of Social Sciences and Law at Brunel, died in a tragic road accident in April 2005, just weeks after handing in his thesis. In a ground-breaking study Mario used ethnographic research methods to explore Avatars, or representations of virtual bodies, in cyberspace. Mario's PhD was awarded after his death. Mario had been interested in photography since 1994 and won a prize in 2002 for one of his photos in a Brunel Arts Centre competition. Mario was a very active member of the Graduate School. An exhibition of Mario's photographs and an event to celebrate his life took place in the Graduate School, Halsbury Building, on 17th November 2005 6-9pm.
